Aloneness and loneliness were examined among never married women in their 30s, although respondents were not specifically asked if they were lonely. This age category was selected because it is near the age 30 turning point for never married women.
Most respondents lived alone and spent considerable time alone, but did not report feeling lonely. Activities that were enhanced by or contingent on sociability were less enjoyable alone. Respondents had developed social support networks among friends and kin and did not necessarily anticipate loneliness as they age.
Possible reasons for the reported nominal loneliness are discussed. Marital status is not necessarily an appropriate independent variable in assessing loneliness. This internationally recognized journal produces one annual themed spring edition focused around current issues and topics.
